Where do rats live?

Rodents are adaptable creatures that can thrive in all sorts of environments, from fields and wooded areas to kitchens and basements. But, where exactly do these pests hide if they’re near our property? While each species is different, rats and mice commonly invade these areas:

  • Gardens
  • Garages
  • Barns or sheds
  • Basements
  • Crawl spaces
  • Attics
  • Wall voids

Where Do Rats and Mice Live?

Although rodents typically thrive in outdoor environments, each species has different nesting preferences. Roof rats, for instance, earned their common name by climbing trees and other structures. On the other hand, Norway rats are known for burrowing in vegetation, often near wooded areas or patios. Some types of mice also prefer to hide in logs or trees, while others are drawn to our homes for warmth. While each type of rodent has different habits, they’re often found in sheltered areas that have easy access to food and water.

Where Do Rats and Mice Nest Indoors?

While rodent infestations usually start outside, these pests may move indoors if your space has everything they need to thrive: food, warmth, and shelter. If rats or mice get inside of your property, they will likely hide in places such as:

  • Wall voids: Almost every rodent species prefers a low-traffic and hard-to-reach area that is hidden from humans. For that reason, wall voids are a common nesting site for these pests, regardless of the species.
  • Attics: Roof rats are most famous for nesting in attic spaces or upper levels of homes. However, if infestations get really severe, other species may also migrate to higher floors of your home or business.
  • Basements: Basements usually have plenty of warmth and clutter for rodents to hide in. Since Norway rats are burrowers, they’re the species most associated with basement infestations, but almost any type of rodent could find this area comfortable.
  • Near food: House mice in particular are notorious for invading kitchen cupboards and areas near pantries. Especially if your food is left out in the open, you’ll likely have rodents hiding nearby.

How to Find Rodents in Your Home

Identifying a rodent infestation can be a challenge, largely because these pests prefer to stay far away from busy areas. You’ll likely come across their mess or destruction first, such as gnaw marks on the walls or droppings in the cupboards. If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to take quick action; the longer you wait, the worse the infestation will get.

The fastest and safest way to get rid of a rodent problem is to partner with a licensed pest control professional like those at Suburban Exterminating. If you think you have an infestation, contact us today for help!
